Problem-based learning is an approach to teching which is becoming increasingly popular with innovative health science educators. Several different forms of problem-based learning systems have been developed using different media formats and incorporating different principles of learning. In this monograph the authors describe in detail a problem-based learning system which they have developed and used extensively at McMaster University. In addition to describing this particular system, popularly known as the Portable Patient Problem Pack (P4), the authors present a general treatment of the technique of problem-based learning based on their personal experiences and philosophy. Different types of problem-based learning are discussed, the advantages and limitations of the patient-simulation format in problem-based learning are examined, and the major criticisms that have been directed at problem-based learning are addressed.
