The report summarizes the results of a study regarding the retirement plans of managerial and blue-collar workers, and the effect of the availability of options for job modifications on those plans. It was found that the availability of job modifications encouraged the postponement of retirement. Managers and bluecollar workers differed significantly with respect to preferred modifications, and in the proportions wishing to extend their employment beyond the conventional retirement age. It was also found that perceived adequacy of post-retirement income and its effect on the standard of living are crucial considerations in formulating retirement plans. A conceptual framework for understanding the retirement decision is provided. The advantages and disadvantages of retaining older workers are discussed. The major implications of the findings are presented with a focus on managerial strategies and government policies.
