Guidelines for Environmental Monitoring in Underground Coal Mines (Phase 1 Report)

This report assess the economic, legal, institutional, and technical factors that affect the current and future status of implementation of mine monitoring systems in the United States. It begins with a description of a poll of the Mining Production Research Committee and the Mine Monitoring and Communications Committee of Bituminous Coal Research that was conducted to establish industry monitoring needs and constraints. Existing systems in the United States and foreign countries are then reviewed and compared with the requirements set forth by the industry committees. At the same time, State and Federal mining laws are reviewed, and equipment presently available from suppliers of mine monitoring systems and components is discussed.
