摘要

Examines two Pacific island societies with similar colonial histories but very different cultures. Male roles are defined similarly in both cultures. In Samoan society the role of women in agriculture is not seen as important. In Tolai society, it is recognized as being fundamental in subsistence agriculture and considerable in commercial agriculture. Describes self-employment by individuals or groups of women in relation to the family setting and reviews national (and provincial for the Tolai) policy towards women.
