Micro-Computer Management Systems for Small Vessel Operators. Executive Summary

This is the executive summary of a cooperative research project, funded under the Fleet Management Technology Program of the U.S. Maritime Administration. The objective of the project was to investigate, design, and develop microcomputer management systems for operators of towboats, tugboats, and other small vessels. The report summarizes the project results which included interviews with various types of operators, development of conceptual designs for seven systems of interest, and development of software for two high-priority systems (Harbor Tub Port Performance System and Cost/Pricing Information System). The project identified some of the specific requirements of small vessel operators and explored the potential for low-cost microcomputer applications.
