Modelling for the Control of Energies in a Switched Electromechanical Power Conversion System of a Gyro Bus

The report discusses the problems involved in the modelling for the purpose of optimal energy control in a presently developed gyro bus system. A gyro bus is a corporation bus powered by a flywheel instead of a diesel engine. The gyro bus system consists of a flywheel-driven synchronous machine in cascade with a power electronics stage and a dc-machine, that drives the vehicle. The energy conversion process can be controlled by means of the two switch controlled converters in the power electronics stage and a third switch controlled converter in the field circuit of the dc-machine. The requirements with regard to the control concern the response of the vehicle to the operation of the accelerator and brake pedal as well as the energy-efficiency of the system. There are some options in the mathematical formulation of the control problem. Still, in essence, it is a problem of optimal control of the average power flow in the system.
