An axial-flow-pump stage was designed utilizing blade-element methods in conjunction with axial-flow-compressor blade-element theory and data. Rotor design incorporated a radially constant energy addition and efficiency with a limiting blade diffusion factor of 0.6 at the hub. The stator row returned the fluid to the axial direction at all radii. At the design flow coefficient (0.284) the experimental head coefficient for this rotor was 0.144 (designed for 0.146) at a rotor efficiency of 84 percent with a stage head coefficient of 0.135 and an efficiency of 80 percent. A peak rotor efficiency of 88 percent was obtained at a flow coefficient of 0.265. Radial surveys indicated that at design flow the rotor-outlet conditions closely approached the design values. The stator row turned the fluid back to the axial direction within ±2° at all radii. At reduced flows the flow shifted toward the tip in the rotor. However, under all flow conditions simple radial equilibrium could be used to describe the flow.
