As against the modern practical, but less perfect approach, Lippman succeeded in creating an actual color preservation in the photographic emulsion, by the production of stationary waves represented by alternating dark and light layers within and parallel to the emulsion.nThe article translated here from the original French written in 1894 is a historical one. It describes the first practical approach to color photography;it may also be considered as the first attempt of creating an image closely resembling the holographic technique developed half a century later.
