THE INTERACTION BETWEEN LOCAL BUCKLING AND OVERALL BUCKLING ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF BUILT-UP COLUMNS

Using the general nonlinear theory of elastic stability the imperfection sensitivity of a column, composed of two flat panels at a constant distance is investigated. Calculations show that where the separate phenomena of local buckling and overall buckling occur at the same stress, the interaction between both phenomena in the built-up structure produces failure of the column at much lower stresses, due to the high sensitivity to imperfections of the idealized model of the structure.
