COMPUTER UTILIZATION IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND EARTH SCIENCES: A RECONNAISANCE OF STATUS AND NEEDS

This report is a summary and discussion of the first part of our study of computer application and capability in the earth and environmental sciences. These sciences include geology, geography, geophysics, geochemistry, and environmental engineering. In some of these subjects notably the geophysical fields of oceanography, atmospheric science, and solid earth geophysics computer capability has advanced far beyond that in the more classical fields of geology and geography, and in such aspects of environmental engineering as soil mechanics and sanitary engineering. Our study is concerned mainly with these more classical fields in which computer utilization is least advanced.
