This report is an introduction to the phenomenon of vortex breakdown, also known as vortex core bursting. The first part of the report presents some important elements of basic vortex theory. The second part reviews that has been done on vortex breakdown, including an overview of the historical development of vortex research and a summary of the current state of knowledge on the subject.
