Alternative Dispute Resolution in the Construction Process: A Course of Study for Construction Managers

This research report has presented a proposed course of study of Alternative Dispute Resolution in the Construction Process intended for graduate students in construction management. The need for such a course is untested. Most educators and industry leaders agree that the construction manager must have good communication skills, but few are specific about how to insure the graduate engineer will obtains such skills. The ability to convey written ideas concisely is important, but the construction manager uses oral communication and negotiating skills far more than the written word. James W. Poirot, Chairman of the Board of Ch2M Hill, stresses the need for the project team (designers and construction managers) to be aware that their actions may cause disputes and that they must respond to disputes in a timely and compromising manner to assure project goals are met and that the project team remains harmonious Poirot 88. How and when the construction manager becomes aware of the impact of his actions is for educators and industry leaders to debate. This ADR course offers the construction manager a practical view of his role in the disputes process. (kr)
