Ozone has been measured in Canada using remote-sounding methods since E.H. Gowan brought a Fery Spectrograph (Figure 1) to the University of Alberta in Edmonton in the 1930's. After earning an undergraduate degree in Edmonton, Gowan studied for a Ph.D. as a Rhodes' Scholar in Oxford, England during the time when G.M.B. Dobson was setting up the first network to study the climatology of ozone. Ozone had been identified in the atmosphere as a result of its absorption of sunlight some 40 years earlier, but the work of Dobson I1 was the first that provided systematic, accurate measurements of the ozone column. Dobson's interest in ozone stemmed from his desire to understand the temperature structure of the upper atmosphere and the fact that ozone plays an important role in determining the energy balance of the stratosphere.
