Three dimensional radio frequency (rf) ion traps and quadrupole mass filters were invented by W. Paul and co-workers~([1]).As described in Paul's Nobel lecture~([1]),quadrupole fields can confine ions so that they are "trapped". The first commercial quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer used a three dimensional (3D) trap~([2,3]); these are still widely used. However over about the last decade, mass spectrometers based on linear rf quadrupole traps~([4]) have been developed. These offer superior performance and are discussed here.
