With over 170bn barrels of recoverable bitumen, the oil sands of Alberta are one of the largest deposits of crude in the world. For the last several decades, oil companies have spent tens of billions to boost production to current levels of 1.4mn b/d. Yet, scant months ago, the oil sands were wallowing in a tar pit of gloom.
