Over 11bn cf/d of unconventional gas will enter the Chinese market by 2030, accounting for over a quarter of total domestic gas supply and meeting much of China's incremental demand beyond 2020. Coal bed methane (CBM) holds huge resource potential but the uncertainty lies in the timing of development and the investment to bring it to market. Near-term production targets must be realistic as the industry addresses the technical and economic challenges to large-scale development.
