I am writing this month to discuss 2 silent killers that rob tree vitality and yield over the course of time, without most growers noticing until the damage is extreme. The first of these is the Prionus Root Borer, which attacks many different speciesof trees including pecan. This pest is present in varying degrees across the growing belt. It has been around for as long as I can remember and is very difficult to control. I would suggest that you read an excellent article that was in the Pecan Growermagazine within the last issue or two by Dr. James Dutcher, an entomologist with the University of Georgia at Tifton. He has done most of the work on controlling this insect and is the authority on it in pecans.
