From the Farm: In defense of a 'grand lady'

Much has been written recently about the unsuitability of the 'Desirable' variety for continued use in the Southeast. While it is true that the culture of this variety is difficult at times, it remains the premier nut in the Southeast. Let's examine some of the good, bad and ugly of this nut and see what comes of it. On the negative side of the ledger is the fact that it does scab worse than many varieties. It also will not produce a huge crop in a given year as a 'Stuart' will. It takes more attention than most varieties and could be considered "high maintenance" in terms of both spray requirements and management.
