The site where a runway, a wind-sock and, at best, a simple hall once stood has now become a place that operates like a highly complex multifunctional machine that is trimmed for efficiency. Airports ceased long ago to serve merely as the start and end point of a journey. The gap left as appeal of and fascination with flying itself declined has long since been compensated for by airport operators with an extensive range of shopping, gastronomy and recreational facilities. This means that airports are still magnets for entire regions, attracting recreational visitors and travellers alike. The modern airport meets a variety of needs and gives cause for just as many expectations.
