Questions remain after brief hearings into deadly sinking

A torturous night. Amchitka Pass, 100 miles west of Adak. Winds 85 knots and 30-foot waves. The F/V Katmai loses steering, struggles, then sinks. The Katmai died in the Aleutians on Oct. 22. That much we know. What we don't fully understand is the setof circumstances that conspired to kill seven men. Serious questions remain: The F/V Katmai was built in a Florida shipyard as a shrimp boat designed to fish the shallow and relatively calm coastal waters in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic. She had a shallow draft and rounded hull.
