Sardine quota goes fast: The first fishing period for sardines off Oregon and Washington flew by in just 16 days. It opened July 1 with 26,800 metric tons up for grabs. By July 17, the quota was taken. Jerry Thon, owner of the sardine processing plantAstoria Holdings, said there were plenty of fish around and, with the catch allocation slashed to half of what it was in 2007, "It didn't take us very long to catch them all." Last year, the July sardine fishery lasted only 25 days, though in the past it has run to mid-September.
