Dungeness gets a clear, cold, and late start of the season

Oregon's Dungeness crab season got underway just in time for the new year, with cold, sunny weather and a starting price of $2.30 per pound.After a month-long delay to wait for crab to fill their shells with enough meat, negotiators met on Dec. 26 to set the price for the first 24 hours of the season. Officially, the season finally began at 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 31, with a 64-hour pre-soak period just before. Boats began to offload as early as New Year's Eve afternoon. At New Seasons Market in Portland, California Dungeness had been selling at $7.99 per pound in late December. While retailers couldn't put Oregon crab on the market for holidaycustomers, waiting was the right thing to do, said John Corbin, chairman of the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission.
