Bristol Bay outlook: Expect another big haul of sockeye salmon this year at Bristol Bay. That's the bottom line in two forecasts, one from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the other from the University of Washington Fisheries Research Institute. The state forecast predicts a potential harvest of 28.5 million sockeye. The UW forecast sees potential for 27.7 million. If either outlook holds true, the catch will be comparable to the excellent catch of 28.6 million sockeye we saw in 2010. As always, the size of the harvest depends somewhat on r the rate the fish pile into the bay and on processor capacity. The fishery typically peaks around the Fourth of July.
