For years, fishermen working in the treacherous waters off Alaska figured that they were as good as dead if they went overboard in bad conditions. Frigid water and big waves made survival for more than a few minutes unlikely. They didn't think that personal flotation devices could possibly improve their odds. They even abused the acronym, PFD: Person Found Dead.
