Recent drama of ship raises need for tugs in Aleutians

Crisis was narrowly averted in the Aleutians last month. On Dec. 3, Unalaskans and Alaskans alike prepared for the most bizarre spill ever when it was reported that the cargo vessel Golden Seas had lost power, was drifting toward Adak, and might be carrying millions of gallons of canola oil. Fortunately for all, the 738-foot vessel ultimately regained partial power, happened instead to be carrying a shipment of rapeseed, and ended up making it safely to the Port of Dutch Harbor with the assistance of the Coast Guard and — especially — the icebreaker Tor Viking II.
