Quota down, price up: King crab season got off to a stormy start in October with strong winds, high seas, and — worst of all — a smaller quota. The total allowable catch for Bristol Bay king crab is 14.8 million pounds, down from 16 million pounds last year and 20.4 million pounds the year before. But despair not! At least dockside prices are looking good.While early talk had them upwards of 5 dollar, the crab fleet ultimately received 6.25 dollar. The average price was just 4.53 dollar last year. Because of this boost, the 64 boats that have registered are expecting to do as well as they did last year and perhaps even better. Some fishermen are even pleased about the trade-off.
