"Dead zone" returns to Oregon coast: For the sixth consecutive year, ocean researchers have detected a low-oxygen "dead zone" near shore on the central Oregon coast, primarily between Florence and Newport. Though not as severe as last year's historichypoxia event — which caused a devastating die-off of sea creatures — this year's condition increases the risk for marine life struggling to recover and raises questions about climate change trends. Most species of sea stars and sea cucumbers and manybottom-dwellers are still absent from central Oregon reefs; the lack of habitat and food could deter rockfish from moving into the area.
