In the early 19005, the future site of Petersburg was getting attention from hard-working native fishers for its plentiful waters. Then hard-working Norwegian fishermen stopped to partake in the bounty, and soon a bustling fishing port was on the waterfront. Young fishermen grew into older fishermen and their sons joined the fleet; now these grandsons are the elder statesmen of the waters with IFQs and multiple permits and that same hardworking love for the Little Norway seafood economy - yet how does the under 30 and new high school graduate get his Xtratufs firmly in the industry's door? "I need to borrow cheap money," Petersburg fisherman Justin Peeler commented at the Dec. 3 Petersburg Chamber of Commerce general membership meeting. "To get thefinancing is really hard, to come up with any kind of collateral or backing to get a decent boat."
