Shellfish producers in the Pacific Northwest are now the "front line" in the world's encounter with ocean acidification, and lessons from the first battles to protect fisheries and ecosystems are beginning to emerge. Last winter, shellfish growers andtribal leaders in Washington state sought help to confront this threat to their livelihood. In' response, Gov. Christine Gregoire embraced our suggestion to create a Blue Ribbon Panel on Ocean Acidification. She tasked this group to provide clear advice on how the state can understand, adapt to, mitigate, and remediate damage from acidification.
