After sampling, Oregon crabbers expect bounty

After a solid season last year, the upcoming commercial Dungeness crab harvest in the Northwest looks promising, with a plentiful catch and good prices. "All the indicators are we'll have another good year," said Nick Furman, executive director of theOregon Dungeness Crab Commission. After testing six spots off the Oregon coast in mid-October, crab were filled with enough meat to meet the baseline needed to start the season in Newport. So, no further testing will be required there, Furman said. Thesampling was conducted by the commission and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. "Whatever they've been feeding on, they're nice and full," he said of crab from the Newport area.
