At a time when many retailers are cutting back, hunkering down and buttoning up, retailer John Agrusa has done the exact opposite.The owner of Van Jaarsveld Decorating Center in Utica, Mich., Agrusa operates just 12 miles from Detroit in one of the areas hardest hit by the recession. The automotive industry crisis of the past two years has led to 15-percent unemployment in the area and a one-in-four housing foreclosure rate. Despite these harsh realities, Agrusa remains upbeat and resourceful.
