"... Our extruder was functioning erratically, and we have produced several hundred rolls of film that may or may not have the correct thickness moisture barrier. How can we check these rolls to determine which has the correct barrier thickness and which doesn't?" Having recounted in my previous guest editorials some of the past history of the evolution of infrared instrumentation and how it has begun to move out of the laboratory into the real world of materials analysis (1,2), I thought it might be interesting to describe three analytical problems that came to us from the plastic film industry and discuss how infrared techniques solved them.
