With the globalization of textiles trade and complete dismantling of quota regime and other restraints after the year 2004, the non-tariff considerations such as quality, eco-friendliness, environment, occupational health and safety and social responsibility will determine the market to a large extent. While meeting these objectives, the industry will also have to be price competitive. It is, therefore, imperative that Indian textile industry has to gear itself with a holistic approach to become the engine of growth and enhance its market share which, at present is estimated to be very meagre nearly 3.0 percent of the total world textile trade. It is, in this context that the role of Bureau of Indian Standards, the national standard body cannot be over emphasized specially in the area of quality assurance and compliances with the emerging non-tariff barriers. Indian textile industry constitutes about twenty percent of domestic industrial production and four percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It is the third largest producer of cotton fibre, the largest producer of jute, largest exporter of cotton yarn, second largest producer of silk and fifth largest producer of synthetic fibres in the world. It has the largest loomage and second largest number of spindles in the world. Yet, its share in global trade in textiles is less than three percent.
