This proceedings contain six papers focusing on the state-of-the-art management of southern pine plantations (e.g. loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) and slash pine (Pinus elliottii)). The future for intensive pine plantation silviculture and of tree improvement in the Southeastern USA is discussed. Risk assessments for fusiform rust (Cronartium quercuum)-resistant loblolly and pines and planting nonlocal seed sources of loblolly pine are also covered. The incorporation of ecophysiology into Southern pine tree improvement is examined, and the biological, social and regulatory constraints to intensive plantation culture are reviewed..
