Ornamental of the Month: Seagrape (Coccoloba uvifera)

Seagrape, Coccoloba uvifera, is one of Florida's most exotic-looking native plants. It is very commonly used in the southern half of the state, especially along the coastal regions. They are one of the primary plants - along with coconut palms - thathelp add a tropical beach atmosphere. The large, leathery leaves can reach 5 to 8 inches across. They are round with prominent red veins and emerge bronze colored. Seagrape flowers in spring and summer with pendulous spikes of tiny white blooms. These are followed by small, edible purple fruits in grape-like clusters.
