Phases of the type Bi_(1-2x)A_(2x)VO_(4-x) have been prepared up to x approx = 0.25 with A=Ca, Sr, and Cd. The monoclinic distortion of the ideal tetragonal scheelite structure disappears with increasing x. single crystal X-ray diffraction studies were conducted for samples with A=Ca and Cd. Impedance measurements show conductivity values analogous to those observed for stabilized zirconia.
