Black Sheep Success Story: Hebridean sheep - 20 years on and off the rare breeds list

Hebridean sheep have made it off the Rare Breeds Survival Trust watchlist, having now exceeded 3000 pedigree breeding ewes, in the same year that the Hebridean Sheep Society celebrates it's 20th anniversary. Hebridean sheep came under the umbrella ofthe Rare Breeds Survival Trust from it's beginning in 1973. Only a handful of flocks existed at that time, mainly in parkland settings on large estates in England and in smallholders flocks. The Hebridean Sheep Society was formed in 1987 following an REST initiative to encourage groups to take responsibility for their own breeds. From the outset, the group was fortunate in having members who truly believed in the future of the breed and set out with great determination to prove the place for these small, black, horned sheep in the modern world.
