L'Oreal and online retailer eBay have setded a legal dispute over the sale of counterfeit goods on the popular auction site. According to The Wall Street Journal, L'Oreal first took eBay to court in Europe in 2007 after being dissatisfied with the retailer's response to its concerns about the sale of counterfeit items online. In 2011, the European Court of Justice ruled that eBay was liable for counterfeit goods sold on its website, adding that online marketplaces could not claim exemption from liability for these infringements if made aware of the illegal nature of these sales.
