Sacral Fractures in Dogs: A Review of 32 Cases

Sacral fractures, which have not been well described in the veterinary literature, may cause urinary or fecal incontinence and neurologic deficits of the hind limb, perineum, or tail. To investigate the association between neurologic and orthopedic sacral injuries in an effort to identify variables affecting clinical outcome, 32 cases of sacral fractures in dogs were reviewed. Signalment, cause of injury, and neurologic deficits were evaluated, Sacral fracture location and presence of other orthopedic injuries was determined with pelvic radiographs. Sacral fractures were classified as abaxial or axial. Follow-up data were collected via telephone survey or recheck physical examination.
