EDTA-Dependent Pseudothrombocytopenia in a Horse

Thoroughbred mare, 7 years, with a large-intestinal obstruction showed mature neutrophilia and thrombocy-topenia (17, 000 platelets per microliter with a reference range of 102,000-198,000 per microliter). During enterotomy for the impaction, disseminated intravascular coagulation was suspected, and heparin was administered. Further studies administered 12 hours after surgery revealed thrombocytope-nia (13,000 platelets per microliter) and mildly prolonged 1-stage prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time with normal fibrinogen levels. Heparin administration was continued until 2 days after surgery, at which point an anemia was diagnosed that presumably was caused by over-hydration, hemorrhage, and/or heparin-in-duced erythrocyte agglutination. By day 5, the anemia had resolved, and thrombocyto-penia (34,000 platelets per microliter) was the only remaining abnormality.
