Radiocontrast Nephrotoxictty: A Review

A review of human and veterinary literature confirmed instances of acute renal failure following intravascular administration of iodinated contrast material, termed radiocontrast nephiotoxicity (RCN). In cases of RCN, depressed renal function was evidenced by elevated serum creatinine concentrations within 24-72 hours after the contrast study and was sometimes associated with oliguria. With supportive care, spontaneous recovery generally occurred within 1-3 weeks. Occasionally dialysis was necessaryand, in some cases, renal damage was irreversible.
