Multiple Diskospondylitis Associated With Aspergillus Species Infection in a Dog

Diskospondylitis, a common problem in dogs, is most often caused by Staphylococcus aureus but may also be caused by Aspergillus spp. Aspergillus spp infection is usually associated with widespread dissemination of lesions throughout the body. The following is only the second reported case of Aspergillus diskospondylitis without systemic involvement and it is the first reported case of canine mycotic diskospondylitis in the United Kingdom. Female German Shepherd dog, 4 years, showed intermittent stiffness, difficulty in rising, and difficulty in lifting her head for 10 months. Though no neurologic defects were evident, pain was elicited on flexion of the neck and on application of lateral pressure to the lower neck and dorsally between the scapulae.
