摘要

In a recent publication by Shvindlerman and Gottstein [L.S. Shvindlerman, G. Gottstein, Scripta Mater. 54 (2006) l04l] it was concluded that negative grain boundary energies as a consequence of solute segregation will result in a destruction of a polycrys-talline material. In the present study it is shown that this will be the case for open systems only, whereas in closed systems a meta-stable equilibrium with slightly negative or zero grain boundary energies could be attained.
