Lawn Seed Consumption: Looking Back & Ahead -- Weather and construction trends impact grass seed sales across the US

Lawn seed sales so far this year have been a mixed bag across the US. While sales in the Midwest were up about 30 percent over last year, extended rainfall dampened sales in the mid Atlantic and the Southeast, according to industry players. Consumption was about the same in (he Southwest, but total dollar sales were down because the cost of product was down. While weather will again have an impact this fall, these seedsmen generally do not expect sales to be up from last year, with the possible exception of the Southeast which had experienced several drought years before rains came this spring. Then there's next spring. As always, weather will have an impact on sales. Seedsmen also will keep an eye on the economy, but generally expect housing starts to remain strong.
