After 40 years' fishing, and over 20 years as National President of the New Zealand Fishing Industry Guild, Tauranga fisherman Sean McCann has a few things to say about marine reserves. Calls for marine parks where all commercial fishing is banned maysound like a good idea to some, but what would the country really gain and, just as importantly, what would we lose? Most people have little idea of how our commercial fishing industry works. They virtually all eat fish and expect fish shops or supermarkets to always offer a selection of fresh New Zealand fish. I don't know anyone who would rather have farmed fish from Asia instead of New Zealand fish. To get that New Zealand fish, we need an inshore fishing industry. And we do have one, even if it's tiny by world standards.
