摘要

Vast clinical experience supports the safety of air/saline contrast echocardiography and transcranial Doppler (TCD) in the assessment of a venous-arterial shunt. However, objective evidence to confirm the safety of these procedures is lacking. Complications of air contrast administration, including transient neurological symptoms, are rare and reported in 0.062% of patients . However, in series of selected populations, such as patients with pulmonary hypertension or atrial septal aneurysm, the incidence of transient neurological symptoms after air contrast injection has been higher, i.e. between 4 and 6% .
