Incidents like that-fraternization of front-line soldiers-recurred time and again. Such cases took place rarely at first and did not bother the Russian command overmuch. However, they assumed mass character on Easter eve a year after. Therefore General Alexei Brusilov, Commander-in-Chief of the Southwestern Front, issued an order of the day in which he stressed this in part:"The enemy has shown his cunning and perfidy once again, while some of our officers and riflemen have unfortunately evinced impermissible lack of discipline on the occasion of the holiday, and betrayed their Slavic mildness, carelessness and good nature, which is absolutely improper in combat conditions."
