EC seeks to criminalize 'benchmark' manipulation

On Wednesday the European Commission proposed making manipulation of benchmarks used to price financial instruments, including metals derivatives, a criminal offense. The move follows the scandal of suspected manipulation of the LIBOR benchmark interest rate, but the EC is also looking at benchmarks in the energy and metals sectors, EU internal markets commissioner Michel Barnier told reporters in Brussels.
