BHPB writes down Australian nickel operations

BHP Billiton said Friday that margin deterioration had forced it to write down the value of its Australian Nickel West assets by 450 million dollars before tax. The impairment is to be recognized as an exceptional item. BHP will finalize its annual review of non-current assets in conjunction with the preliminary financial results, to be released on August 22, it said.
