INFLUENCE OF Aspergillus niger STRESS ON ANTIMICROBIAL AND BIOCHEMICAL PROFILING OF Cichorium intybus

摘要

The present study was conducted to investigate the protein content, antimicrobial activity, phytochemicals, total phenolic compounds and enzymatic attributes of C. intybus under Aspergillus niger. The seedlings were inoculated from 1 to 7 dpi (day post-inoculation), samples were harvested and extracted using 10 mM sodium acetate buffer (pH 5.2). Protein content, total phenolics, enzymatic activities and phytochemi-cal constituents were determined by standard methods. The protein content was found higher at 3-4 dpi, while enzyme activities were best at 2-3 dpi. The phjrtochemical and total phenolic contents were measured at 3 dpi and phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, steroids, flavonoids, terpenoids and cardiac glycoside. The total phenolics like gallic acid (12.85 mg GAE/100 g), caffeic acid (8.51 mg GAE/100 g), vanillic acid (2.54 mg GAE/100 g), (15p,16a)-16-hydroxy-15-(hydroxymethyl) beyran-18-oic acid (17.82 mg GAE/100 g), chlorogenic acid (1.55 mg GAE/100 g), m-coumeric acid (4.64 mg GAE/100 g) and ferulic acid (5.84 mg GAE/100 g) were recorded. From results, it is concluded that C. intybus has the ability to cope with A. niger at lower dpi.
